Welcome
Welcome to the
home of F.L.O.R.A. - the Forest Lane Residents' Association of East
Horsley, Surrey. We are small though active community (there are
only 20 homes in Forest Lane). Whilst this site is primarily of
interest to the residents, we are happy to give a
flavour of the area to visitors.
Where are we?
East
Horsley is a (large) village some 20 miles South West of London, set in
a semi-rural part of Surrey. Forest Lane is a secluded road on
the edge of the village and bordering Effingham Common, a large
unspoilt area of open ground preserved by Guildford Borough Council for
public enjoyment. Part of the Common may be seen on the right
hand side of the aerial view opposite. The locality is still
fairly
heavily wooded with native deciduous trees. One such area, known
simply as "The Forest" is managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust and may be spotted in the bottom left corner of the aerial view. Opposite The Forest is part of the Drift Golf Club.
Secluded but not
isolated!
As much
as we are able to enjoy our environment and the many varied walks
through
the surrounding countryside we are by no means isolated. The M25
motorway is only a few miles away with both Heathrow and Gatwick
airports each within a 35 minute drive. Even more locally, a
few minutes walk down Forest Lane brings you to Effingham Junction
railway station, with trains to London and Guildford.
Major Success for FLORA
One of the founding objectives of FLORA was to bring about the reconstruction of the old road surface which had fallen into a poor state of repair. Thankfully this is now complete.

1. Road Tidy
Many thanks to all those residents who have taken part in all of our "Tidy-Ups". The next is scheduled for 28 June.
2. Effingham Common
Guildford Borough Council have now approved the plan to
include Effingham Common in their "Special Protection Area Avoidance
Strategy" (SPAAS). This has been generated in response to English
Nature's concern over the pressure put on the "Thames Basin Heaths
Special Protection Area" (the Dartford Warbler!) by proposed housing
developments in the area. This reaffirms GBC's commitment
to maintain the Common as an open area for public enjoyment. It
also provides for a programme of improvements over the next 5 years, to
include the upgrading of footpath access, restoration of the wetland
areas, and the provision of dog litter bins, signage and interpretation
panels. There is also a plan to provide a small car parking area
(for up to 12 cars) in keeping with the existing landscape; though this
will not be on Forest Lane itself.
